Home Office Setup Ideas

Over the past year, working from home has become the new normal for so many. As everybody continues to adjust to these new working conditions, having a home office that accommodates your professional needs is essential for your productivity and comfort.

No two home offices will be the same. But, if you’re looking for some guidance to get you started, we are here to help. Here are five home office ideas:

1. Find a Good Spot

Regardless if your work-from-home schedule is full-time, part-time, or hybrid, you’ll be spending a lot of time in your home office, so it’s important to find a good spot in your home.

If you don’t already have a designated office space, consider using a spare bedroom. Or, you could reconfigure part of your dining room, basement, or attic.

If you live with others, you want a spot away from distractions. So the living room and kitchen are less than ideal locations.

2. Purchase a Quality Chair and Desk

As stated previously, you’re probably going to spending a great deal of time in your home office, which is why you want to purchase a high-quality chair. The best way for an eight-hour workday to feel like 20 is sitting in an uncomfortable chair. Although a high price tag may deter you at first, it’s smart to invest in an ergonomic chair you know you’ll love.

Likewise, choosing the right desk is just as important. You want a desk large enough to accommodate your workplace essentials, such as your laptop, files, and decor, and writing space.

You also want a desk that is the right height. Having a desk too high or too low can be strenuous on your neck and back. Most people find desks between the 27- and 30-inch range to be fine. However, you could always invest in an adjustable desk to ensure you have the perfect height. Likewise, standing desks are great options for those who don’t want to sit all day.

3. Liven Up the Space with Some Decor

Nothing keeps you more uninspired like sitting in a blank room for eight hours a day. One of the best benefits of having a home office is deciding how you design your office space.

Some home office decor ideas include adding artwork or repainting the walls with an interesting color or design. You can add carpets, bookshelves, lights, storage space, plants, your collection of 1960’s baseball cards, anything you can think of.

Make it fun. Make it personal. But most importantly, make it YOU.

4. Have Ample Light

Shocking as it may seem, sitting in a dim room staring at a computer all day isn’t good for your health. Having ample light in your office can help reduce eye strain, increase alertness, and improve overall mood. In fact, the National Sleep Foundation found having natural light in your office can help improve mood and sleep quality.

Try positioning your office in an area with a window. Likewise, you want your laptop or monitors pointed away from the window to avoid glare. If you have a nice view, that’ll give you something to enjoy during intermittent breaks.

Lastly, smart lights can ensure you have ample lighting at all times. These can adjust to changes in your schedule and are perfect for the early morning risers and night owls.

5. Invest in Home Office Security

Your home office will undeniably contain sensitive information and expensive equipment. That is why it is important to invest in smart home office security.

You can automate your home and office to check in from anywhere at any time. Some home automation features include smart doorbells, so you can answer the door if you’re stuck in a conference call, and a smart thermostat to keep you cool and comfortable throughout the workday.
