Can a Home Security System Improve the Value of Your Home?

Being a retired Metropolitan Nashville Police Officer with over 35 years of experience in public safety, I learned quickly that alarm companies and law enforcement are an important partner in the effort to protect citizen’s lives and property. As an officer, I loved responding to burglar alarm calls because the security company could tell the responding officers exactly where the point of entry occurred. I can’t begin to explain how important this type of information is for the safety of the responding officers.

Citizens have often asked me, “what is the value of a security system” or “should I invest in one?”

My answer is yes! A security system is worth the expense and peace of mind to know that you have an extra layer of protection for your family and property. Here are some things to keep in mind as you choose a security system.

  • With today’s technology, alarms are very accurate at detecting real threats. This reduces the number of false alarms police are dispatched on and keeps our officers where they are most needed.
  • Adding a visible security camera significantly decreases the likelihood that a burglar will attempt to break into your home.
  • HD security cameras let you get the license plate number off a getaway car or zoom in to see the writing on a suspects shirt. All of these advancements are very valuable to law enforcement officers trying to crack a case.
  • Posted security system signs and decals make a huge difference as a deterrent to break-ins. A burglar knows that if he attempts to force his way into a home with a security system, the two things that he will have to deal with are “NOISE” and “ATTENTION.” Remember, those burglar “rats” like to operate in quietness and seclusion. This is why a security system is a major addition to a home protection toolkit.

Please remember, even the best or most expensive security system is not 100% burglar-proof. Always pair your system with good common sense, awareness, and vigilance. For example:

  • Always close and lock all windows and doors when you are away. Even if you are only across the street chatting with your neighbor.
  • Never leave your garage doors open or unlocked.
  • Join a neighborhood watch or online neighbor group, such as NextDoor and keep an eye out for suspicious behavior in your area.

COP CONNIE TIP: Your insurance provider will usually give you a nice discount on your homeowners insurance premium if you have a security system installed.
